101 Practical Homeschooling Ideas Ep. 001: Issues with Public Education

In this episode I will point out some of the problems with the public education system today and why fixing the system is not as easy as the politicians want us to think it is. I will discuss how multiple expectations on the public school teachers actually limit their ability to meet any of the expectations except the lesser ones.

I emphasize that the nation does not have a teacher problem. In fact, I believe we have the best teachers in the world. Unfortunately, they are limited by the organizational structure of today’s education system. The number one obstruction to today’s teachers is: The U.S. Department of Education and the Common Core.

  1. I have been listening to your podcasts for a month now but just heard this one. I am a teacher in a private school. My children have ADD and are struggling in school. We want to homeschool, but I am torn about leaving my job. I recently earned my Masters in Education. You have a higher ed degree…do you ever miss working in the school? I feel a little like my education is a waste if I don’t pursue my career. Though, I know my experience will help me with my kids. Any thoughts? Thank you for your podcasts. They have helped me figure out so much.

DJ, my wife and I started the podcast as a way to more fully utilize the things that I learned in school. Just like us, you will find that there are lots of ways to make your education useful. You knowledge and experience will help you in so many ways both in and out of the home. Knowledge is never wasted even if you are not using it in the ways you initially intended while you were in school. We love the flexibility of homeschool and your education will magnify that benefit even more.
The one thing that you will have to be okay with (and I know this from personal experience) is that people around you will think that you have wasted your time. Once you deal with that, you will see all kinds of open doors that lead to your children’s success.
