More Dangerous Than Smoking?
If you are anything like me you probably think that is a ridiculous idea. I bet your children will agree. It sounds to me like someone needs to get out of the research business.
Well, I have changed my mind. I am now convinced that if we are following the public school model of sitting our children down for 4 to 6 hours while they read, add, subtract, etc…, we could be creating some serious health issues that will impede how they do simple tasks and could, ultimately, shorten their lives.
Kelly Starrett’s book, Deskbound: Standing Up to a Sitting World has completely changed my life. Last November I started experiencing severe lower back pain. My doctor told me that the space between my discs was shrinking. According to him, I would eventually have to get surgery to fuse the discs. I had no desire to even consider surgery. So, I started researching and somehow stumbled on this book. My school purchased me a standing desk and I went from sitting 4-6 hours a day to sitting a total of 1 hour throughout the whole day (INCLUDING LUNCH).
Check out Dr. Starrett’s book here and think about how you could get your children to spend more time on their feet while they are doing school. It will clearly explain why keeping your children in motion throughout the day is so important.

For younger children, you can probably just have them stand at the table, but as your children get older (and taller) you could think about these options from Amazon or you could just scour Pinterest for a way to build your own.
