Memory is not what it used to be! And I don’t mean what you put in your computer. Memorization is taking a backseat in today’s approach to curriculum… and in case you were wondering, that is not a good thing.
Memorization is necessary
We are all familiar with the phrase: “Use it or Lose it!”
So what does that mean when we are talking about the fact that the curriculum of today does not rely on memorizing like when I was a kid?
I get that we don’t want all of our education to be just memorizing. That is a bad thing. In today’s episode, I want to just discuss some of the other problems with going to the other extreme and avoiding memorization at seemingly every turn.
The key is to utilize techniques that help your children rely on both logic and memorization. There is no reason why we need to treat those skills as mutually exclusive. Instead, creative days in your homeschool experience will help you children develop a well-rounded approach to problem-solving.
So, don’t forget to use some of the old memorization games and techniques from your past.
Even the youth today know that old school can still be cool school.
